The dining room set for the evening
Napier, seasonal dining

Cooked with what's good this week.

A short menu that follows the season and the boats in, in a dining room on Tennyson Street. Open Wednesday to Sunday, bookings recommended.

The menu

A short list, done properly

Five or six dishes a night, built around what's good at the market that morning.

Shared starters

Bread and cultured butter, oysters when they're running, a changing vegetable plate. Order two or three between the table.

Mains

Fish landed that morning, a slow-cooked lamb dish, and one vegetarian main every night. Portions built for sharing sides.

Wine and dessert

A short list of Hawke's Bay and Central Otago wines, poured by the glass. Dessert changes weekly, ask what's on.

Chef plating a dish in the kitchen
Who we are

A small kitchen, a short menu

Rata opened on Tennyson Street in 2018, four tables at a time until we found our feet. Chef Mia Sinclair runs the pass, buying most of the produce herself.

We would rather do six dishes well than twenty averagely. If it isn't good enough to serve family, it doesn't go on the menu.
